Description: Elizabeth Mary Browser was a slave set free and becomes part of a clan whom are sent to different Confederate companies to spy on the armies and obtain information.

Summary: Mary Browser was a slave that was freed by her master once the head of the house passed away. The head masters daughter, Elizabeth, noticed Mary's potential and educated her and sent her to Philadelphia, where she later met her husband. Elizabeth was known for being 'cazy' for she worked with the slaves and even sent in spies to the Confederate companies to retrieve information; one of the slaves she sent in was Mary. Mary gets sent on one last mission before she can finally return back to Philadelphia and her husband.

Excerpt: One place she could not turn to for it was the Van Lew mansion on Church Hill, where she had been born a slave. Elizabeth Van Lew, after her father’s death, had freed the family’s slaves. She herself owed Miss Van Lew her education as well as her freedom, for it was that spinsterish lady who had sent the young freed slave girl to Philadelphia, having recognized her potential
