Statement of Commissioner Thomas B. Leary Concurring in Part and D...

By: Thomas B. Leary

Government Reference Publication

Today the Federal Trade Commission recommends that Congress enact legislation to help consumers protect their privacy when transacting business on the Internet. I agree that some legislation is appropriate, but believe that the recommendation in the Report endorsed by a majority is too broad in one respect and too narrow in another. The recommendation is too broad because it suggests the need for across-the-board substantive standards when, in most cases, clear and consp...

Can-Spam Rulemaking Project No. R411008

By: Federal Trade Commission

Government Reference Publication

For the first time today, I checked my daily e-mail, and the entire list, all 27 of them, was SPAM. My concern is the growing number of pornographic SPAM that I receive along with their disgusting pictures. I have tried to unsubscribe to most of these, but their unsubscribe link is bogus, I still get e-mail from them, and by unsubscribing (when I can), I seem to get even more SPAM from even more sources-as if unsubscribing sends my information to more people.

Can-Spam Act Rulemaking, Project No. R411008

By: Daniel L. Jaffe

Government Reference Publication

On behalf of the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), I am writing to express our strong opposition to the establishment of a national Do Not E-mail Registry. Spammers are sophisticated criminals. They will never comply with a Do Not E-mail Registry, so it would not reduce the spam that consumers find objectionable. In fact, this registry will create major new security and privacy risks for consumers, as the government cannot develop a foolproof system for protecti...
